Cenote diving is very different from conventional open-water scuba diving. Once a diver enters an overhead environment, direct access to the surface may no longer be available. Cavern Diving
Cavern diving takes place in an overhead environment while remaining within the limits established by the applicable training and site procedures, including access to the daylight zone and entrance. Max penetration distance 60 mts/200 ft from the exit, using a guideline as well
The goal is to develop awareness, buoyancy, control and experience in an overhead environment without exceeding the diver's certification or training.
Full Cave Diving
Full cave training represents a more advanced level of overhead-environment training. Depending on the training agency and certification pathway, divers may develop additional skills for complex navigation, jumps and gaps, gas management, emergency procedures and different cave configurations.
Progressive training is fundamental to responsible cave diving. A diver should only conduct dives that remain within the limits of their certification, experience, equipment and current conditions.
Essential Full Cave Diving Procedures
Full cave diving requires much more than the ability to swim through a cave. The objective is to maintain a controlled, predictable dive from beginning to end.
Continuous Guideline
A continuous guideline provides the primary navigation reference and the route back toward the entrance.
Cave divers must know how to follow, deploy, secure and manage a guideline while avoiding unnecessary entanglement hazards or damage to the cave environment.

Gas Management
Gas management is one of the foundations of cave-diving planning.
A cave diver must consider:

Many cave-diving training systems use conservative gas-management concepts such as the rule of thirds, while more advanced dives may require different calculations based on the equipment, configuration, dive profile and training level.

Buoyancy, Trim & Propulsion
Excellent buoyancy and trim are particularly important in the cenotes of the Riviera Maya.
