Chac Mool & Kukulkan Cenote Diving

Chac Mool and Kukulkan are two of the most famous cenotes near Playa del Carmen, located just a few meters outside Puerto Aventuras in the Riviera Maya. This cenote park offers the opportunity to experience two completely different cavern dives at the same site, making it an excellent choice for divers who want to explore the unique underwater world of the Yucatán Peninsula.

Kukulkan Cenote

We begin the dive at Kukulkan Cenote, famous for its spectacular natural light effects. Sunlight enters through the open-water section of the cenote, creating incredible light beams and laser-like rays that penetrate the crystal-clear freshwater.

As we descend to approximately 40 feet / 12 meters, we encounter the fascinating halocline, where freshwater and saltwater meet. The change in water density creates a unique visual effect, making the underwater scenery appear to move and distort around us.

The combination of crystal-clear water, natural light, jungle surroundings, and the dramatic halocline makes Kukulkan one of the most memorable cavern dives near Playa del Carmen.

Chac Mool Cenote

After exploring Kukulkan, we visit Chac Mool, offering a completely different cavern diving experience.

One of the highlights is the impressive Cathedral, a large air-filled cavern surrounded by beautiful geological formations. As we explore the cavern, we can admire numerous stalactites and stalagmites, formed over thousands of years.

The dive also includes another fascinating encounter with the halocline. Looking upward through the changing layers of freshwater and saltwater, divers can enjoy a beautiful view toward the main entrance of Chac Mool, where natural light illuminates the cavern.

The contrast between the two dives is what makes Chac Mool and Kukulkan cenotes such a special experience. Within the same dive site, you can enjoy dramatic light effects, impressive cavern formations, crystal-clear water, and two different halocline encounters.

Important Note About Photography

Personal cameras are not permitted at this cenote because the park operates a professional photography concession.

However, an excellent professional photographer is available at the site and takes a selection of photographs during the dive. After the dive, you can view the photographs free of charge and decide whether you would like to purchase them. This allows you to enjoy the dive without worrying about carrying or protecting your own camera equipment.
