Playa del Carmen Caribbean Reef Diving

Playa del Carmen is one of the best places in the Riviera Maya to experience scuba diving in the Caribbean. Just offshore, colorful reefs, marine life and clear tropical waters create exciting dive sites for beginners and experienced divers alike.

Playa del Carmen offers some of the most diverse scuba diving in the Riviera Maya, with easy access to beautiful Caribbean coral reefs just offshore. The local reefs are home to colorful tropical fish, sea turtles, rays, moray eels, lobsters, crabs and many other species of Caribbean marine life. Depending on the season and dive site, divers may also encounter larger pelagic species passing through the area, like the Bull Sharks in winter season

Most Playa del Carmen reef dives are comfortable recreational dives, with depths commonly ranging from approximately 30 to 100 feet (9 to 30 meters). The warm Caribbean Sea, generally good visibility and variety of reef environments make the area suitable for both experienced certified divers and divers looking for relaxed guided scuba diving in Mexico.

One of the advantages of scuba diving in Playa del Carmen is the variety of underwater conditions and dive sites available close to shore. Some reefs offer shallow, calm sections ideal for relaxed exploration like "Sangri-La" or "Snappers Cave" dive spots, while deeper sites provide more dramatic walls with coral formations, like "Moc-Che Deep", "Pared Verde", or "Los Arcos" dive sites, and opportunities to observe larger marine life. Local conditions can vary with currents, waves, visibility and weather, which is why choosing the right dive site according to your experience and the day's conditions is an important part of every dive.

Playa del Carmen Diving Logistics

We normally offer two diving schedules in Playa del Carmen and one  extended schedule for trips to the Punta Maroma area

1- Morning dives — 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM

We usually explore deeper reefs south of the city, at depths of approximately 60–100 ft (18–30 m), where currents tend to be stronger. These dives are best suited to divers with Advanced Open Water certification or higher.

Please meet us at 7:30 AM at the agreed meeting point.

2- Afternoon dives — 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM

Our afternoon trips visit shallower reefs at depths of approximately 30–45 ft (9–14 m). These dives are ideal for newly certified Open Water Divers and certified divers with limited experience.

Please meet us at 12:30 PM at the agreed meeting point.

The most suitable option depends on your certification level and diving experience. We’ll help you choose the right trip for you.

3- Punta Maroma — Extended Diving Trip

For trips to Punta Maroma, north of Playa del Carmen, we offer a single extended schedule, approximately 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. This trip includes two beautiful shallow dive sites suitable for beginners.

Meeting and preparation

Please arrive at the meeting time indicated above so we can complete the paperwork, get dive gear ready, and conduct the pre-dive briefing before departure.

Both schedules include visits to different dive sites. Morning trips last approximately 4 hours, and afternoon trips last approximately 4 hours, plus preparation time before departure. Except for the Punta Maroma trip, which lasts approximately 8 hours.
